1 - What movie did you watch? I watched Legally Blonde. 2 - Who was the main character and what was their objective? The main character is Elle Woods, and her original objective is to get into Harvard Law to win back her boyfriend, Warner. While at Harvard, her objectives change and she focuses more on proving everyone else that she is smart enough to practice law and use her skills in court. 3 - What obstacles did they have to overcome? With Elle's initial objective, the biggest obstacle was that Warner was now engaged to a smart, educated woman named Vivian. Each time Elle tried to get near Warner, Vivian was there making snide comments or pulling mean jokes on Elle. Eventually, Elle grew determined to prove that she was just as smart as Vivian was. This lead to her second set of obstacles, in that no one at Harvard believed in her, except for Emmett, her advisor. She had to prove time and time again that she was more than just a "ditsy blonde" and she was just as capable of studying law as everyone else was at Harvard. 4 - What were some of the specific tactics used to overcome the obstacles? Her first tactic in overcoming the obstacle of Vivian was to "look the part" of a Harvard student. She also would find Warner on campus and try to remind him of the great times they had in their relationship. When Vivian would share out in class, Elle made it a point to present her argument in front of the class to prove that she is capable of learning the material. Her first tactic was very superficial because all Elle cared about at that point was getting Warner back. Her determination to overtake Vivian helped Elle realize that she actually could have a career in law. This led to a new tactic in overcoming the obstacle of Harvard. In an effort to prove herself, she refocused her attention from social gatherings toward her studies. She put in the work, just as her classmates did, and she proved that she was actually learning the concepts of law. When it came time to represent a client in court, she maintained a crucial part of her identity by not revealing her client's alibi to the rest of the law firm, and was still able to win the case without the alibi. Her persistence toward her education, while maintaining her own values, led her to graduate Harvard Law with top honors. 5 - What were 3 supporting characters and their objectives? One supporting character was Emmett, Elle's advisor and eventual fiance. Emmett was a junior partner at the law firm that Elle was chosen to intern at. Emmett's objectives were to win court cases, appease the head lawyer, Callahan, and to help Elle during her time at the law firm. Another supporting character was Elle's nail technician, Paulette. Paulette's objectives included getting her dog back from an abusive ex-husband, and getting the attention of the UPS man who frequented their nail salon. She was able to do so with Elle's help. Lastly, although there are many supporting characters in the film, Vivian does deserve mention here. Vivian's objective was to marry Warner and to prove herself as a successful female lawyer. She was defensive and rude toward Elle because she was Warner's new fiance and did not want the ex-girlfriend hanging around. Later in the film, when Callahan tries to seduce Elle, we learn that Vivian felt Elle was getting preferential treatment because of her looks. At the end of the film, Vivian simply wanted to graduate with a law degree because she worked hard for it.
