I watched the movie Salt, starring Angelina Jolie. She is a Russian spy working for the CIA. I would not say it is my favorite movie, but it is a movie with lots of twists and turns. Evelyn Salt was trained as a child to be a Russian spy. She has spent years perfecting her life and hiding her background. When her mentor shows up, the movie gives the impression she turns back to her original training and is ready to fulfill the goal of her Russian trainers. We think her objective is to kill the Russian President. As we move through the movie, there are many physical obstacles to overcome as there is a whole cast of “good” guys whose job it is to protect the very one Salt is intent on getting to. It is a movie, so we understand getting beat up, running down the middle of the road, and running a police vehicle off an overpass (and walking away) are not realistic. On the other hand, we must think about the mental and physical stamina involved to even be able to think through solutions in these situations. Then we come to the part where Salt meets up with her Russian counterparts. The obstacle here is seeing her husband and then watching him be assassinated. She had to maintain absolute control over her emotions to prove she was still on board with their plan. To me, this mental front would be significantly more difficult than the physical obstacles. Any crack in her emotions would have meant her death and she knew that. She was able to maintain that control, but it is obviously with great difficulty. At this time, we understand that she has shifted her loyalty and plans to work against the Russians. Throughout the movie, Salt must rely on her training (both physical and mental) to control her thoughts and plan her next steps. She is always thinking ahead two steps. It is that ability to think and react quickly that makes the movie a success. Supporting characters include “Ted Winter” who we think is a friend until the end and he turns out to be at the center source of the plot. His objective is to frame Salt for the entire plan and make himself look like the hero. Also “Darryl Peabody” who we see throughout the film as intent on arresting Salt but allows her to escape in the end. They both put obstacles in front of Salt, but for different reasons.
